以古代经典爱情故事《梁祝》为创作蓝本，全剧分为五个乐章“回首”、“三年同窗”、“楼台会”、“泣血、哭坟”和“化蝶”。

舞蹈与现场音乐的互动及影像与灯光的空间营造，塑成了一场写意浪漫的清新小品。

这次的从演还加了阿龙霸的古琴和澳洲原住明的Didgeridoo这两种乐器，让表演添加生色。

An innovative creation inspired from the old Chinese legends of Liang Shan Bo and Zhu Yin Tai. The play includes well-known chapters from Studies, Eighteen Farewells, Cries The Grave, and The Butterfly among others to tell the story through stage presentation.

The solo dance and live music interaction is where things get interesting. The dancer and the musicians showcase their skills and techniques, and collaborate with the different medium rhythm to arouse great interest, and dive deep into infinite possibilities.

Wangnin Bunmei is a performance troupe which blends music and Butoh elements. Based on Butoh technique, the participants will explore a new way to stand perfectly straight. One of the purposes of this exercise is to understand how our force of habit warps our body. This help focusing on lines inside and outside of body and between people.

She began to study jazz dance at age five, and is trained in modern and contemporary dance. Since 2002 she has been working with Butoh master Yukio Waguri. In 2003, she joined the well-known contemporary dance company Co. Yamada Un, and she co-created a performance company with 8 musicians called Wangnin Bunmei (“Fool’s Civilization”) in 2004.

石本华江(日本）

Born in Tokyo, 1952. The disciple and main male dancer of Tatsumi Hijikata direct lineal. With his rigid and flexible body, and the variety of the dance styles, mainly based on the change of the subjects, shows the new possibility of the future dance. Publication of the CD-ROM and DVD-ROM of Butoh Kaden in 1998 and 2004 。 Provided an opportunity of the dance reevaluation that focus on Hijikata’s method.

和栗由纪夫 (日本)1952年出生于东京，是土方巽直系弟子。他拥有既阳刚又阴柔的自如身段，“变形体”是他最擅长的技巧。和栗先生以先师土方巽的技巧重新整合与编定黑暗舞踏技巧，并于1998,2004出版教材光碟《舞踏花传》。

Her butoh based multimedia project “eyes fluttering in my knees” was recognized as “the most surprising and extraordinary event in the independent art sciene of the year” (Latvian Television, 2008).

Skaidra Jančaite
(Lithuania)

Graduated from the Kaunas J. Gruodis Conservatoire in 1987 with a speciality in choir conducting, and from the Lithuanian Academy of Music in 2002. Skaidra Jančaite frequently sings in Lithuania; she participates in concerts of avant-garde and experimental music as well as in different projects; she also sings during festivals of classical and contemporary music. She has been well known as a performer of sacral music.

凯迪雅(立陶宛。前苏联)
1987年毕业于J. Gruodis音乐学院合唱指挥系，随后又往Lithuania音乐学院深造。凯迪雅是位歌手，经常在立陶宛演唱。也常参与前卫与实验性音乐的演出。她也是一位宗教演唱家。

Grad is a professional actor, schools drama workshop facilitator and a creator of shadow play puppet and other types of puppetry. 1993 set up Well Drama Club, 1999 Aug joined the 7th International back theatre Conference in York (UK). 2003 Sept He joined the 8th International Playback theatre Conference in Japan. His acting and directing experience include the shadow play Da Tai, and Xie Lu Shang in 2009, The Quarantine and Nyoba Kan Butoh performance The Strange Remark in 2010.

伟杰是一位专业演员，学府戏剧工作坊帶領人，也是少有的皮影、大小木偶札作人。参与演出及导演的作品包括2008年的《一人一故事独角戏》， CCCD 行为艺术的《女演》、 2009年影话戏的《搭檯》、及致群劇社的《邪路上》。2010 年影話戲《防疫禁區》，及壽板舞踏作品《怪謎》。

Boyz was born in Malaysia.as a professional drummer in hands percussion team,he have been learning drum about 15 years.His rhythm language is rooted in Chinese shigu ,Chinese percussion ,gamelan, Latin percussion. Boyz also coaching 24 festive drum Malaysia. In this few years,Boyz also invited to overseas to perform, such as Europe Art Festival, Doha Asia Games Cultural Event 2006,Europe Art Festival Touring ,Singapore Art Festival,France Art Festival. His recent 2011 performance includes Knocking and Butoh performance with Nyoba Kan members in Mydance Festival 2011 Moutain, Water and Flowers.

周顺兴 (手集团）
周顺兴，出身于马来西亚吉隆坡。2001年加入手集团敲击组成为全职鼓手，兼任教育。马来西亚二十四节令鼓推动小组之一，十三岁开始打鼓，都年来不停的学习的敲击节奏…善长于狮鼓，敲击乐，gamelan ,拉丁鼓等乐器丰富与开阔对鼓的生命。曾参于多项国内外的大大小小的演出，如多哈亚运会文艺演出（Doha Asia Games Cultural Event 2006) ,欧洲艺术节（Europe Art Festival Touring ）新加坡艺术节（Singapore Art Festival),法国艺术节（France Art festival)等。而最近的2011演出有《叩》和MyDance Fest 2011与寿板团员合作的舞踏表演—《有山有水还有花》。

Gideon Alubakhan (Malaysia)

Aluba, an experience guitarist and music composer. Beng involved himself in few of the Hands Percussion performance, including Chaos in Unison (2008) and Dialogue in Skin (2010) in Australia, Rhapsodrums (2010) and the recent performance Knocking (2011).

Other involvement are Rashomon, Taiwan University Arts Festival and Hear Out Music Exchange in Singapore.

Aluba has 11 years guitar teaching experience and also in his past, he has been actively involved in underground music band, playing alternative, heavy rock, metal rock etc. He likes to experience and explore to different type of music form, later, he started to play Gu Qin, Sitar, Samisen, even the Australia native music instrument, didgeridoo etc. Through the music, he find his inner peace in life, creativity and exploring the truth self.

本地资深的吉他手及作曲家,并拥有十一年的吉他教学经验。他通过音乐寻找自身的宁静，创新与生命的真谛。

曾活跃于地下音乐圈，组织金属音乐，另类音乐乐团等。因为喜欢不断尝试不同的音乐风格，后来也学习西塔琴，三弦琴，古琴，甚至澳洲原住民的didgeridoo 等。

另外曾参演多部手集团的演出，包括前往澳洲的《鼓疯》(2008)，《鼓说》(2010)，《Rhapsodrums》（2010）和近期的《叩》（2011）；还包括《罗生门》，台湾大学文化节，新加坡的《Hear Out》音乐会等。

Jane Chen
Jane is an artist with an intuitive love for the art and crafts of Indonesia from early childhood. Born in Jakarta and moved to Bali after she graduated from the Art College. Perpetually active, working as though she was playing, she flows along the inner yearnings of her heart and soul. Her accomplishments, the accumulations of her appetite for ever expanding experiences from arts and crafts, product designs, pure scents, ancient chanting, dance, martial art, somatic, meditation and her healing modalities are like Vipassana in motion.

For the past 22 years, she has been practicing “White Crane” Silat, an Indonesian Martial Art that promotes a sound mind and a fit physical body; evolved from the ancient Southern China Shaolin and Bodhidarma.

She further refines the artistic aspects of these martial art movements and channelled breathing meditation into various dance forms, and has been one of her magnanimous tools for her 'returning home'. She is also fortunate to have learned the essence of movements from grandmasters of Butoh, Balinese and Javanese dance.

The Annexe Gallery would like to extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of our dear friend Caecar Chong (1974 - 2010) who passed away yesterday on 18 February, after battling cancer.

Although trained as an architect, most of us will remember Caecar Chong for his invaluable award-winning contributions to the performing arts and design scene in Malaysia, chiefly as one of the principal members of the Nyoba Kan dance company, together with Lee Swee Keong and Kiea Kuan Nam. Although diminutive in stature and quiet in person, Caecar was larger than life onstage, mostly seen in Nyoba Kan's critically acclaimed and adventurous productions.
Caecar has also worked as an actor, set designer and photographer, among other pursuits. One of the things that was striking about Caecar was he never set limits for himself. His adventurous spirit will remain an inspiration to us all.
Here at The Annexe Gallery, we're very proud to have had the honour and privilege to share in Caecar's talent, humour and insights as an artist and human being.
Thank you for the memories, Caecar. We will miss you very much.

毕业于中国戏曲学院。以代表作《对花枪》《目莲僧救母》多次荣获全国京剧演员大赛奖项，及首届国家最高奖“文华奖”表演奖，创立了京剧新的行当：文武老旦。80年代参予现代戏剧表演及导演创作。90年代受邀于法国，及日本现代舞团，参加现代舞巡演。2000年以来，自导自演京剧剧目。多次参加实验话剧的演出，及现代京剧的演出。曾两次举办个人独特的京剧专场。2007年编导现代舞台剧《谁能饶得了谁》。该剧以崭新的艺术形式，多元阐述诊断人们在社会压力下所呈现的通病。此次又将以新的创意展示——舞踏与京剧联袂：《红白寓言之一》。

About Katsura Kan
Katsura Kan is a celebrated master Butoh artist, with decades of experience as a solo and collaborative performer, teacher and choreographer. Kan graduated from the Buddhism University in Kyoto and studied Noh Theatre with master Hirota at the Kongo School. He performed with the seminal Butoh troupe Byakkosha (1979-1981) known for its austerity and integrity. Based in Kyoto since 1979, Katsura has since taken his distinctive brand of Butoh around the world, staging acclaimed performances and collaborating with artists in various countries. Among his most significant works include "Bhagavad Gita" (2000, Bangkok) based on the Mahabharata, "La Mort D'Empedocle" (2004, Paris) based on the Greek tragedy, and "Curious Fish" (2001) presented at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival where his company received a five star critics’ rating. In 2001, he began an extensive performance tour that has taken him to Israel, Egypt, West Africa, Eastern Europe, Australia, and the USA. Meanwhile, his work in performance and teaching has taken him to many remote parts of Africa, Europe and Asia. Kan’s current research interest is in the development of Beckett Butoh Notation, utilising the Butoh notation of Tatsumi Hijikata as a point of departure. Kan pursues the possibility of the globalisation of Butoh and an enlightenment of the classical Japanese Noh theatre with the goal of a new communication design for deep democracy.

On Sunday evening I went to see Nyoba Kan’s new feature work She Walks in Beauty Like the Night, at the Annexe Central Market. Frankly, I am not a great fan of butoh. I blame my dislike upon being introduced to butoh at too young an age. Being forced to move across the floor at a snail’s pace was a torment not to be endured by a teenage dancer. I have not been able to eradicate that early prejudice, and even now I find a small dose of butoh can last me a long time. Therefore it was with some apprehension that I went to the Annexe, somewhat bolstered by the memory of seeing The Curse of the Forbidden Palace, Nyoba Kan’s performance last year, when the company transformed the galleries of the Annexe into grotesque depictions of the extravagance and cruelty of China’s last dynasty. But followers of Nyoba Kan do not expect to be disappointed by this small but dedicated company, and neither was I.

The first scene of the tripartite work was the most perfectly formed, expertly revealed by the lighting which came dimly from the burning filaments of naked bulbs scattered across the floor. The slow pace of butoh, what Pang Khee Teik, one of the managers of the Annexe and our compere for the evening, referred to as ‘butoh time’, allows a certain degree of attention to detail which cannot be enjoyed in other forms of dance. There is a particular sense of kinaesthetic empathy — in the slowness of the movement, you can feel what the dancer’s body must be feeling. As one flexed his little toe you feel a sympathetic twinge in the foot, as another puffed air into her cheeks you felt the stretching of the face. You appreciate the iron will which drives each movement — at this pace, bridging the gap between two low platforms from a crouched position is a marvellous feat of human engineering.

There are also wonderful textual sensations available from butoh, into which you can dive and wallow. In the first scene, as one of the dancers crouched she crushed her ostrich-like tutu around her waist, and the complex crunchings of the stiff fabric were palpable. As the dancers lifted their splayed feet into the air to display the soles of their feet covered, like the rest of them, with white makeup, I got a sense of powderiness on the skin. In the second scene, one of the dancers pressed her face carefully into a bowl of cold white rice – watching her, I was certain I knew exactly how it felt.

A sense of narrative also kept the first scene firmly on track. Swee Keong, in his familiar guise as guide and savant, sat meditating against the wall, while the demons of his fantasies cavorted like divas upon tiny individual red platforms. Gradually they become aware of the audience — it was like seeing a caged tiger turn and look you in the eyes. The yogi quelled them with a handful of flowers hurled through the air, and, mercifully, I felt, the demons’ attention shifted to the bare light bulbs dangling around them. Kuan Nam did a particularly good job here, transfixed by his light bulb with the air of a bemused cross-eyed kitten.

The second scene, in another gallery of the Annexe, was less successful. The lighting, in garish primary colours, did little to create an otherworldly atmosphere for the dancers’ demonic characters, and the geometric colour-theory video projection seemed like an unnatural imposition in a world otherwise composed of textured, organic creations.
In the third scene, Lena Ang, in a beautifully downy transparent dress, restored order and interest, blowing soap bubbles as Swee Keong tidied away the stage. It was a reworking of a similar conclusion in Nyoba Kan’s last feature performance in the Annexe, The Curse of the Forbidden Palace, in which Swee Keong mopped up after a messy durian-smothered orgy. I had also seen a similar motif in the Perfect Circle, the series of contemplative Buddhist scenes produced by Musical on Stage, in which the cast offered brooms to the audience, who were encouraged to help sweep the snow of polystyrene pellets from the stage. Surprisingly, in the Perfect Circle, some members of the audience actually declined to help, which seemed unnecessarily churlish after all the hard work of the cast, but Swee Keong’s smiling but commanding presence in the Nyoba Kan production could not be denied. The audience accepted the white floor fabrics he offered them and passed them backwards as meekly as children, delighted to be given the opportunity to be part of what was happening onstage.
The whole scene, in fact, resonated with childlike charm. Lena and Swee Keong treated every floating soap bubble with the wonder and respect that it deserved. There was also a powerful moment which dissolved the usual archetypal characters of butoh with a touch of real humanity – Swee Keong stroked his hand along Lena’s arm, and Lena, out of those enormously painted and beglittered snow queen eyes, gave him a look – and such a look! It made me long for greater interaction between the two, but it was over as soon as it began. Lena floated offstage, leaving Swee Keong in a last indulgent solo, accompanied by a video projection of his Chinese calligraphy work run backwards and sped up, so that it looked like the brush was sucking the art work off the page. In a masterful stroke, the final moment in the projection was slowed down, so that as the brush neared the last (or, rather, the first) stroke on the paper and the audience held its breath, time seemed suspended. And then, blackout.

The surprising thing about butoh is that despite the pace, I often feel as if there is not enough time to look at everything. The scale of attention shifts from the crude and flamboyant to the intimate and subtle. As in Blake’s poem, you see the world in a grain of sand. Every roll of the eye, every breath, every crooked finger, is soberly presented for careful reflection, and suddenly, I wanted the dance to move even slower.

In the years 1994-96, Lena Ang also taught dance ethnology and western dance history at University of Malaya and Akademi Seni Kebangsaan (now, ASWARA). Her academic study and research had been in Central Javanese court dance. She received an MA in dance ethnology from the University of Hawai’i (1987-90) and a BA in music at Ohio Wesleyan University (1983-87).

After establishing Taro Dance Theatre and seeing four years of prolific work, Lena Ang took a break from dance to start a family. She has lived in Hong Kong, New York and London since 1996. For now she lives and works in New Jersey, USA with her husband and children. After eight years of putting dance on hold, she got back to it by teaching children’s creative movement in elementary schools in New York and London.

The last five years have been a further learning phase for Lena Ang. She has taken advantage of the hearty cultural smorgasbord, Butoh included, in the cities she has lived. She has taken Butoh workshops with Katsura Kan, Ko Murobushi, Joan Laage and Marie Gabrielle Rotie, witnessed performances and talks by numerous Butoh practitioners such as Yoshito Ohno, Akira Kasai, Dairakuda Kan, Sankai Juku, Eiko and Koma as well as American and European Butoh practitioners. All this have only opened up a bigger world of dance to her and further solidified the shape of her practice.

PINK (2007), an evening-length work on the theme of gender and power, marked Lena Ang’s return to choreography and performance. It was also Taro Dance Theatre’s 10-year reunion performance, bringing together her dancers from the UK and Australia. It was met with much zeal among old and new audiences at The Annexe. PINK was nominated for four Cameronian Boh Awards.
